Tell Congress to Vote for Equal Pay! It's About Time.
Did you know that the Center for American Progress Action Fund has found that pay discrimination will cost the average woman $434,000 over a forty year period? Women in general make cents to the dollar less than men, women of color make even less, and mothers make even less. This is certainly an issue that affects women, but it doesn't affect only women. The wage gap has a significant impact on children too - since a woman's income impacts the family's income.
Fortunately, you can do something - this week - to help end this kind of pay discrimination.
We just got notice from MomsRising that Congress will be voting on the The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act this week! It could be in the Senate as soon as next week, and on President Obama's desk for a signature in his first days on the job.
As MomsRising says, these Acts would "allow individuals to better fight pay discrimination, strengthen penalties for violation, compel employers to explain wage gaps, and develop training for women and girls about salary negotiation."
What can you do? Tell your Congressperson to support these important steps towards equal pay for women by sending an email here. And do it today! This vote is happening soon, and we literally cannot afford to wait.
