If you're a mama as incensed as we are by the use of Bisphenol-A in baby bottles, sippy cups, water bottles, and more disturbingly (and importantly, perhaps) canned food, and canned infant formula, it's time to make your voices heard once again.
Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA) recently introduced a bill, the "Ban Poisonous Additives Act of 2008" (H.R. 6228) to the House of Representatives. This act is calling for the removal of BPA from all food and beverage containers. Simple, but to the point, don't ya think? Another bill, the BPA-Free Kids Act of 2008 (S. 2928) was introduced in the Senate by Charles Schumer and Diane Feinstein, and this one calls for a ban on BPA from all children's products (but not food).
Despite the fact that removing toxic chemicals from the things we buy seems like a no-brainer to us, these bills currently have few co-sponsors. We'd like to see our legislators names on these bills too, so we're going to call and email to tell them so. Won't you join us?
More comfortable on the phone? Call your legislators and tell them you'd like them to co-sponsor these bills (call your senators for S. 2928, and your representative for H.R. 6228). You can also go here to find their phone number using your zip code.
And for those of you in Oregon (seems I've got Earl, Gordon and Ron on speed-dial these days):
- Rep. Earl Blumenauer, 503.231.2300
- Rep. David Wu, 503. 326-2901
- Rep. Darlene Hooley, 503.557-1324
- Rep. Greg Walden, (541) 776-4646
- Rep. Peter DeFazio, (541) 465-6732
- Senator Gordon Smith: (503) 326-3386
- Senator Ron Wyden: (503) 326-7525
More comfortable in the virtual world? Send an email to your representative asking them to sign on as co-sponsors by entering your state and zip code here. To find your senators' email by zip code, go here instead.
Soon mamas, soon maybe we'll all be BPA-free too.
